David qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser with a “Big 4” international practice, where he spent 8 years specialising in tax planning and tax mitigation advice to owner-managed businesses. He brought that expertise to Ribchesters when he became a partner in 1994, and in 2013 he was appointed a director of Ribchester Smith & Law, then a division of Ribchesters. He has since gained wide recognition as a specialist in tax planning, the property sector and in advising on business acquisitions and disposals. David also has extensive tax investigation experience and led the firm’s tax investigations and litigation support services. David retired in April 2026 and remains a consultant with Ribchester, Smith & Law. David’s professional philosophy is that no challenge is insurmountable, and he approaches life away from work in a similar fashion! His main interests are skiing, running up and down mountains (having competed in more than 250 races, including 26 Ben Nevis races) cycling (including cycling more than 3,000 miles through Spain, Morocco, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania in recent years raising more than £15,000 for charity).
Jack graduated with an honors degree in Economics and Accounting from Newcastle University in 1982 and earned his Master’s Degree in Philosophy at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. Jack qualified in 1984 as a Chartered Accountant with Humphries & Ribchester, a founder firm of Ribchesters. He became a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1986, Jack then spent several years in senior financial positions in Hong Kong, USA, China, Singapore, and the UK before returning as a Partner in 1992 with Ribchesters and was later appointed a director of Ribchester Smith & Law, which was a division of Ribchesters. He now dedicates his expertise wholly to Ribchester, Smith & Law’s clients matters. Jack is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English and is uniquely placed to provide advice on investments between the UK with Hong Kong, China, and the Far East. He is also equipped to provide business advisory and tax advice on UK residents with overseas income and gains. Over 3 years of the pandemic, Jack managed to raise over £30,000 for charity by conducting over 10 webinars and having over 150 one-on-one Zoom meetings with BNOs providing them with advice on tax issues of UK residents, etc.
Josephine Law graduated from Newcastle University with an honors degree in Mathematics in 1982. After graduation, she worked in several international accounting firms, both in the UK and in Hong Kong. She joined Ribchesters in 1993 and was later appointed Managing Director of the Ribchesters’ Newcastle office which is now Ribchester Smith & Law. Josephine speaks fluent Cantonese and English and provides specialist advice to, and manages the accounting and taxation affairs of, around 150 Chinese clients. Some of her clients are from outside Newcastle area, attracted by Josephine’s reputation as the very best in her field.
